Fraction of the Radial Velocity Stable Stars in the Early Observations of the Grid Giant Star Survey

چکیده

The GGSS is a partially-filled, all-sky survey to identify K-giant stars with low level of RV-variability. We study histograms of the radial velocity (RV) variability obtained in the early phase of the Grid Giant Star Survey (GGSS, Bizyaev et al., 2006). This part of the survey has been conducted with a very limited nubmer of observations per star, and rough accuracy. We apply the Monte-Carlo simulations to infer a fraction of the RV-stable stars in the sample. Our optimistic estimate is that 20% of all considered K-giants have RV-variability under 30 m s. Different assumptions of intrinsic RV-variability for our stars give 12 – 20 % of RV-stable K-giants in the studied sample. Analytic Study of Grid Star and Reference Star Selection for the Space Interferometry Mission

Grid stars and reference stars provide the fundamental global and local astrometric reference frames for observations by the Space Interferometry Mission. They must therefore be astrometrically stable at the ∼ 1μas level. I present simple formulae in closed form to estimate contamination of these frames by motions due to stellar companions that go undetected in a radial-velocity (RV) survey of ...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

The statistics of accelerations seen in radial velocity searches for planets

Radial velocity searches for extrasolar planets have discovered stars undergoing slow accelerations. The accelerations are likely due to one or more gas giant planets or brown dwarfs orbiting with period longer than the total time span of observations. The stellar acceleration is proportional to the mass of the companion divided by the square of its radius from the star. In this paper we predic...

The Trends High-contrast Imaging Survey. Iv. the Occurrence Rate of Giant Planets around M-dwarfs

Doppler-based planet surveys have discovered numerous giant planets but are incomplete beyond several AU. At larger star-planet separations direct planet detection through high-contrast imaging has proven successful, but this technique is sensitive only to young planets and characterization relies upon theoretical evolution models. Here we demonstrate radial velocity measurements and high-contr...

The First High-Precision Radial Velocity Search for Extra-Solar Planets

The reflex motion of a star induced by a planetary companion is too small to detect by photographic astrometry. The apparent discovery in the 1960s of planetary systems around certain nearby stars, in particular Barnard’s star, turned out to be spurious. Conventional stellar radial velocities determined from photographic spectra at that time were also too inaccurate to detect the expected refle...
